Statewide Advocacy

Since 1953, we’ve been involved in the creation or preservation of nearly every support available to Texans with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). A statewide advocacy organization, we promote, protect, and advocate for the human rights and self-determination of the 500,000+ Texans with IDD and collaborate with local chapters, self-advocates, families, and allies to help policymakers understand what our community needs.

The Arc of Texas, in collaboration with self-advocates, submits formal testimony on bills during the biennial Texas Legislative Session, as well as during each interim period. This is one way we inform legislators about the barriers Texans with IDD endure and our proposed solutions.

Your Voice is Your Power

When self-advocates share what it’s like to live with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) in Texas we help people and policymakers understand our needs. By proposing solutions we influence decisions about state-wide public policies, systems, services and supports. Allies are people who fight for the rights or their friends and family with IDD, and your perspective matters, too.
